Must Have Gun Range Accessories

Throughout my time at a top-tier gun range in Colorado, I witnessed a wide array of setups and accessories that people carried for their shooting sessions. From using shopping bags as makeshift range bags to mismatched firearm and ammunition combinations, range staff sees it all. However, strategic planning and investing in quality equipment can significantly enhance your range experience.

This article aims to go beyond the obvious essentials like firearms, targets, and ammunition. While these basics are a given, I'll highlight some additional must-have accessories that can elevate your range visits.

A Sturdy Range Bag and Protective Case

Investing in a well-designed range bag, rifle case, and protective case for your handguns or rifles is paramount. Look for a range bag with multiple compartments to securely store your shooting gear and prevent it from shifting during transportation. Ensure your bag stands out and is tagged with your information to easily identify it amidst the sea of black or camo bags commonly found at ranges.

Quality Hearing Protection

At the top of every shooter's range gear list should be effective hearing protection. I prefer electronic noise-canceling earmuffs, which allow me to remain aware of my surroundings and heed any instructions from range officers. Given the high noise levels, especially in indoor ranges, many shooters opt to double up on hearing protection by using foam earplugs in conjunction with earmuffs. Remember, investing in top-notch ear protection is essential, as hearing damage is irreversible.

Reliable Eye Protection

Equally crucial is carrying sturdy shooting glasses for that meet established safety standards, such as ANSI Z87.1. Many companies now offer prescription lenses designed specifically for shooting activities. Ensuring your eyes are adequately protected is vital for safe and enjoyable shooting experiences.

First Aid Kit

Safety should always come first, so it's wise to have a first aid kit on hand. The kit's contents can range from basic items like band-aids and eye wash to more comprehensive supplies, depending on your level of training and experience. Consider taking a first aid class and stocking a more extensive kit to handle more critical emergencies.

Tool Kit and Cleaning Supplies

Carrying a small tool kit can be a lifesaver for addressing minor issues like loose screws or other mechanical problems. Additionally, having a small firearm cleaning kit with high-quality lubricants and lint-free wipes ensures your firearms remain in optimal condition, especially in humid environments like where I reside in Florida. Don't forget essentials like lead wipes for your hands to mitigate the risk of lead poisoning.

Speed Loader

Make loading your magazines a breeze with a speed loader like the Uplula by Maglula. Why struggle when you can streamline the process and spend more time shooting?

In addition to these accessories, it's crucial to pack a solid understanding of range etiquette and safety protocols. Respecting fellow participants and adhering to range rules not only enhances everyone's experience but also promotes a safer shooting environment. Stay vigilant, report any unsafe behavior to range officers, and, above all, enjoy your time at the range!
